We Must Learn to Tolerate the Dualities
My dear , in this material world we are always being bounced up and down by the dualities of heat and cold, happiness and distress, poverty and wealth, honor and dishonor, etc. Krishna therefore advises us as follows in Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 2, Text 14:
mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya
śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ
āgamāpāyino 'nityās
tāṁs titikṣasva bhārata
"O son of Kuntī, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed."
If we become elated when there is happiness, we will become depressed when there is distress. So the key is to remain always equipoised seeing how at every moment in all situations we are being blessed by the loving mercy of Lord Sri Krishna. This consciousness is called Krishna consciousness, and is the perfection of our existence.
