Crickets
If an American says they heard crickets, what do they mean?
1. They heard some insects making a chirping sound.
2. They heard some sportsmen in white clothes batting a ball around.
3. They received no response to a question or enquiry.
Answer 1 is possible. Crickets are insects that you might hear chirping on a hot summer night when they rub their legs together.
Answer 2 is wrong. Someone might hear a game of cricket if they see English men in white clothes playing with a bat and ball - but that's cricket, not crickets.
But the most likely answer is the American heard nothing at all - answer 3. They asked a question or made a request and there was no response. Hence, they heard crickets.
And that was what happened to us several years ago when I applied for US citizenship. In our latest video we tell you all about it.
For a democracy to thrive and survive, everyone needs to play their part, so I feel badly that it took me over 20 years to apply for US citizenship.
But I'm also thrilled that I can vote now and take part in the election process. Better late than never. If you have the right to vote somewhere, please don't wait like me. Exercise it now!
Lots of warm wishes to you all,
Vicki and Jay
