Hello, and welcome to this week’s WEN-zine nuggets.

Any number of authors, from Cal Newport (his focus is on navigating problems caused by technology and information overload) to sleep experts to business coaches, suggest ending the day with a wind-down routine or shutdown process. As Todoist’s Becky Kane writes, having a proper routine to end the day can lessen worries and help you start off on the right foot in the morning. Josh Spector, who “teaches experts how to use writing to grow their business,” suggests asking the following during your shutdown process ...

1. Questions to ask yourself about the writing or other creative work you did today:

1. Did you do anything today that will make a measurable impact tomorrow?

2. What was the worst use of your time today?

3. What’s one thing you learned today that will change the way you approach your writing or your project moving forward?

4. What’s the most important thing you didn’t get done today?

5. Is there anything you did today that could be turned into a template to make it easier to do next time?

(If a daily reflection is too much for your schedule, consider answering these questions weekly or quarterly – first quarter 2024 ends in 11 days!)

2. Dealing with change and how to build resilience as an author

In her most recent Creative Penn podcast, Joanna Penn talked with Becca Syme, a USA Today bestselling author of small-town romance and cozy mystery, and who also writes the “Dear Writer” series of nonfiction books, about industry changes.

The question: More options exist for publishing and reaching readers than ever before, and the indie author business models are splintering and diverging, so how do we know which path to follow?

Among the answers:

• We’re seeing a real trend away from this expectation of as many books as you can possibly produce — because we’ve hit the saturation point, basically, everywhere.

• Craft is going to become more important. Storytelling and pacing are going to become more important.
