Hello, and welcome to this week’s WEN-zine nuggets.

First, I am not ... and never have attempted to be ... a mystery author. But I have read my share of mysteries ... which is probably why I immediately thought of mysteries when this happened ...

1. If this can indeed be a mystery plot device (or whatever it would be called), I invite all you mystery writers to do what you will with it.

I have recently fallen in love with erasable pens ... specifically the FriXion brand. I originally bought some over a year ago to use with a Rocketbook ... never giving a thought to their being usable on regular paper ... which I discovered only recently.

But as with all love affairs, the negatives begin to appear eventually. A few days ago I prepared a renewing member’s Press/ID tag ... which I print out on regular paper, sign with blue ink, and laminate. Been doing it for decades. Only this time ...

My signature disappeared during the lamination process! Everything above and below the line was gone ... as if it had never been there. Yes, I had used a FriXion pen. So next, a little late I grant you, I did some Googling. Yep, It was the heat. According to the FriXion website, even homework written using their erasable ink and left in a closed up car during the summer can disappear.

But ... it gets interesting. They say that putting that blank paper into the freezer for a short time makes the writing reappear.

My writerly mind began spinning with possibilities, thinking it may be useful in a mystery or other story. This disappearing ink may be so widely known to others that it is not useful in a story. But if not, I hope someone can use it.

2. Delivering what audiences want – not just what you want to write about – is the key to successful content businesses

The Tilt, a newsletter for content entrepreneurs, yesterday featured Sinem Günel, who started on Medium by publishing content from her personal growth workshop for students. After 172 articles, and earning an average of $6 per article, she changed her strategy ... and committed to writing what the platform audiences wanted instead of her personal stories.

After going “all in” on Medium, she earned more than $11,000 for the month of August 2020. Sinem shares how some of her better-performing articles worked out ... as well as how she uses Medium as a lead generator for her email list and her Medium Writing Academy. Read her story here and think about how you might adapt some of her strategy.
