Achilles Tendonitis Injuries

Why are Achilles injuries more common than hamstring pulls?

I am in the middle of a writing a 10 part series on the dreaded Achilles tendonitis injury. After Part 1 was posted, I could not believe the amount of feedback I have received though personal email, Facebook and blog comments. I guess I touched a “nerve”.

If you aren’t a regular Blog reader, here is a summary to the series with links to the Blog.

Part 1 (click here) talked about the repetitive injury cycle and the 4 stages of diagnosing your injury.

Part 2 (click here) explained why regular strength training does not work, and why you need to do heavy load eccentric contractions. It also showed a video with the Heel Drop exercise.

Part 3 (click here) is a video showing the Eccentric Squat and Reach.

Part 4 (click here) discusses stabilization exercises and stabilizing the ankle joint.

The rest will be in next month’s newsletter.

After Tyson Gay scratched out of the 100 meters semi finals, people suggested he retire, or that he only has “two or three” good races left in [...]

How High can Jeremy Wariner Box Jump?
2011-07-07 04:02:00-04

Several years ago in the days before YouTube, there was a viral video in the running forums of Ato Boldon doing a 60 inch or 1.50m box jump (approximately, video below). The height of the box reaches Ato’s neck or chin. Obviously, people confused this with the vertical jump or vertical leap test, [...]

Part 1 started with Plyometrics, Ground Contact Time, and Sprinting which showed the faster the movement, the shorter the ground contact time.  Part 2 of this series was covered in How to Weight Train without Weights and it focused on speed strength.  So this is Part 3. I want to review strength and resistance training again, [...]

Tips on Preventing Leg Cramps while Racing (or Training)
2011-07-20 04:00:00-04

Last year, I wrote about Tips on Preventing Leg Cramps while Sleeping.  I also covered this topic briefly in Sports and Energy Drinks: The Complete Guide (start with Part 4 and go backwards from the links).  But what about leg cramps while racing? First, what is a leg cramp? It’s a muscle cramp with an involuntarily and [...]

Should Oscar Pistorius be Allowed to Run? Yes, with an Advantage
2011-07-21 16:00:00-04

Oscar Pistorius should be allowed to run.  It’s an interesting human rights story, and thus you can’t deny his rights if he makes the IAAF “A” Qualifying standard.  Rules are rules. But let it be known, he does has some disadvantages, and a lot of advantages. There comes an optimal point where one will have an advantage [...]
