Weekend Clubs

2nd Tournament of Variants
@ BAC Cupertino Sunday evening club

Happy New Year!

We have another treat for all players at the Sunday evening Cupertino-Chess Club on January 13th (5-8 pm).
B
AC will be hosting it's 2nd non-rated tournament of VARIANTS! Chess variants will be randomly selected and explained before each of the rounds! Variants often include a slight modification to the rules of original Chess, making for a unique tournament experience! The event is not rated, so it's all for fun! We will also have prizes and pizza for all participants. As a bonus, and because of our extra stock, this ToV will have even larger trophies for the top scorers!

Our last top placers (on November 15th) were:
1st:  Diya D.,  2nd: Jacob L.,  3rd: Theoren D.

Address: Good Samaritan Church
19624 Homestead Rd, Cupertino 95014
-- Sunday, January 13th, 5-8 PM --

What types of Chess Variants might come up for each round?
Here are the ones we will have in our randomizer (NONE of which were played in the November Tournament):

  1. Double move chess: White makes the first move. From thereafter, each player gets two moves, but must move with two different pieces or pawns.
  2. Early Promotion chess: Pawns are promoted when they reach the 6th rank!
  3. Chess 960: Pieces are scrambled but matched along the first and eighth rank to start the game (also known as Fischer Random).
  4. Freedom chess: For the initial position, pieces are placed by each player anywhere on the board. Pawns must be placed on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th ranks. Players alternate placing pieces on the board.
  5. Ninja chess: Remove knights and start with 4 Bishops each. Bishops are 'ninjas' and can bounce off one wall on any turn (any 1 of the 4 sides of the chessboard).
  6. Reincarnation chess: One captured piece can be brought back from the dead. It is placed on its original square, which must be unoccupied. This constitutes one turn.
  7. Royal Swap:  Each player gets one chance to swap the placement of a king or queen for another. No swap is allowed if a check results. Players can swap any of 6 combinations of kings and queens.
  8. Reject-a-move: Each player gets one chance to reject their opponent’s move. The player with the rejected move must come up with an alternative move and the game proceeds.
