This week we bring you news of a drone taking flight on Mars, a great article that outlines how drones can help American infrastructure, and a reminder of how you can comply with new FAA drone rules.
NASA’s Ingenuity drone made history this week, becoming the first drone to fly on Mars. The
4-pound drone took to the red planet’s skies on April 19 after a week of delays caused by a software glitch. The flight wasn’t long, lasting only 30-seconds, but it marks the drone flight on another planet and opens up the doors to aerial exploration on Mars. Find out more about the Ingenuity drone here.
Drones Can Help American Infrastructure
It’s a well-known fact that American infrastructure needs some help. Physical structures and inspection processes need to be fixed and modernized to keep American industry competitive, and its citizens safe. Congress is currently debating the particulars of the American
Jobs plan, which aims to address America’s infrastructure woes.
Drones have an important role to play as America invests in the future of its infrastructure. Danielle Gagne and the editorial team at Commercial UAV news put together a great article that gives a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the American Jobs plan and ways drones can
bolster that plan.
Complying With New FAA Rules
The final rules requiring remote identification of drones and allowing flights over people, over moving vehicles, and at night under certain conditions went into effect on April 21, 2021. But before you take advantage of the new rules, make sure you meet all the requirements to make these drone
flights.
For flights over people and moving vehicles, you need to make sure your drone meets requirements, as outlined in detail by the FAA. Beyond meeting the requirements, no training is needed.
For flights at night, drones must have active anti-collision lighting visible for at least three statute miles with a flash rate sufficient to avoid a collision. Additionally, you will need to complete free online training from the FAA.
