Dear ,
One of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda is that our dietary choices, our habits and routines change, ebb and flow with the seasons so that we can achieve an improved state of balance throughout the year's seasonal cycles.
In Ayurveda, one of the main principles is that like increases like, and opposites balance. Pitta season, which runs through summer and early autumn, has the characteristics of heat, dryness, and intensity. Even though in some places, summer can be especially humid, it's the heat itself that creates dryness in the body. Thus we are naturally drawn to foods that are cooling and moistening.
How the Rose Creates Bliss
Have you ever eaten a Rose? It is the ultimate Pitta season food. You might not want to eat the petals straight up, but there are many recipes where rose petals and rose water can be incorporated. Some ideas are:
- Rose honey (steep rose petals in honey for two weeks, turning the jar over every day.) (See my Facebook or Instagram post for instructions. Links at the bottom of this email.)
- Rose Petal Jam (add to desserts and drinks - recipe below)
- Rose water/tea (steep fresh or dried rose petals in cool water with fruit, or in hot water for tea)
- Rose Lassi (mix one part yogurt, three parts water, a dash or rose water, a spoon of sugar and a touch of cardamom)
- Commercial Rose Water (cools the skin - spritz it on your face, put a few drops in your hot, tired eyes)
When we eat or drink divinely fragrant rose products, it immediately has an uplifting effect on us.
- The effect of the fragrance soothes the heart and mind, and we immediately feel more loving, more forgiving.
- It calms insecurities, suspicions and sadness.
- Its sweet and slippery properties soothe our irritable nature and moisten our digestive tract.
- It cools external inflammation of the skin or eyes.
- It enhances memory, and the brain functions in a stress free state of bliss.
- Rose creates blissful coordination between the mind and the light of the soul.
- Rose nurtures the nectar of immortality (ojas) which resides in the heart.
Love in a Jar Recipe
This week, I want to give you my Rose Petal Syrup/Jam recipe. The days of summer are passing, but I hope still you will be able to find some wild roses or the Rosa Centifolia (100 petal rose pictured above). Pick just some of the petals on each flower and leave the rest to attract bees. Depending how much pectin you use, it can be made as a syrup or a thicker jam. I find this to be the most intoxicating rose recipes, and my
heart expands with each taste. That's why I call it love in a jar. Click the recipe photo to download and save to your computer.
