Dear ,
How are you?? How are the pandemic restrictions affecting you? Write me back and let me know what’s happening in your life. Would love to hear from you.
I have been making an effort (and it feels like a mighty effort much of the time) to get out in the early morning for a walk. It has helped immensely to lift my spirits as the tedium of the pandemic carries on.
Why walk in the early morning?
The energy of the day (and equally the night) is divided into three circadian rhythms according to Ayurveda. The morning time from 6:00-10:00 am is Kapha time. It is a time when we feel lethargic and heavy. To counteract this energy we need to produce the opposite effect, so we need to have energetic movement.
Getting out for a walk in the early morning produces several effects.
- Firstly, if we are walking towards the rising sun it has the effect of lifting our spirit. So if we are feeling sad or depressed, facing the rising sun while walking will have a beneficial effect. Look around at the beauty of nature. Observe the grand beauty of the clouds and trees, and the tiniest beauty of frost on a leaf, autumn shades of colour, the squirrel digging for nuts.
- Secondly, walking solo listening to nature gives our thoughts and emotions an opportunity to sort themselves out. It is a type of meditation. We can gain clarity and insight without effort.
- Thirdly, this is the best time of day to exercise if we want to lose weight. Moderate movement during this time is more effective at increasing our metabolism than at any other time of day. Intense exercise increases stress, which raises cortisol, and that only drives sugar into our cells and turns to fat. So, a moderate walk serves to both relax us and reduce stress. In my book, those are good reasons to
get out of bed :)
- And, maybe most importantly at this time, is that movement and moderate exercise, as opposed to intense exercise, activates the lymphatic system and stimulates cellular immunity.
I found some beauty on my morning walk recently. I have been wanting some dried hydrangeas to honour my Acadian grandmother, who taught me so much about food and herbs, with few words.
So a refreshing walk in the morning before 10:00 am goes a long way to improving our wellbeing. Think about how you could incorporate a walk into your morning routine. Consider if you have the proper coat and footwear for various weather conditions. Let’s be brave and get out there! And if it’s absolutely miserable weather, let’s put on some dance music and break a mild
sweat.
