How do you meditate? And why?
Â
I'm curious whether you meditate daily, or even sometimes, and what type of meditation(s) do you do? What prompts you to meditate? Do you meditate to relieve stress or anxiety in order to feel a sense of calm, or do you meditate to connect with your spirit to feel transported, or maybe to tap into inspiration?Â
Â
I have a delicate nervous system and recently realized that I spend a lot of time engaging in various types of meditation. I do a seated meditation twice daily, but I also walk in nature, and dance, and pray and chant. I contemplate on sacred writings. And I use my breath to engage my spirit. All of these together help to keep me (somewhat) sane in this crazy world.Â
Â
Do write me back and share with me how you meditate and how it benefits you. I would love to know!Â
Â
And if you don't meditate, I'd love to know why you don't or what prevents you from meditating or what you find difficult about it. And what you would like meditation to do for you. Maybe I can help you with any of that. Check below about different types of meditation and let me know what resonates with you.Â
Â
Contemplation involves reflection on sacred writings, poetry, inspirational literature. art or nature. While we meditate in this state of mind, we put questions to our spirit and our spirt answers. We have an "aha" experience and new insights are revealed that raise our
consciousness.Â
Â
Prayer, Mantra, Malas, Prayer Beads: Prayer can be described as food for the soul. Just as the physical body needs food, the spiritual body also needs food, and prayers of many kinds fills that need. Prayer requires purity of heart so that we may be transported by the words. Prayer
and mantra (repetitive prayer) makes life different from the inside out. Its goal is to calm, uplift and renew us. Many pray in order to receive guidance. The highest prayer, however, is one which transports us to another realm. Concentration and effort in prayer is anathema to having the experience that we desire.Â
Â
Sound: Chanting, Music, Singing Bowls, Chimes. Music and sound can be a ladder to uplift the soul. Music and sound penetrate the conscious and unconscious mind. Everyone's nervous system resonates with different sounds, so each person must find the type of sound that resonates best.
There are universal sound frequencies called Solfeggio Frequencies that have the ability to heal the mind, body and soul. They raise the vibration of the body and mind. The higher the vibration, the deeper the healing. For example, the body normally functions in the range of 62-72 Hz. The lower its vibration, the higher chance of disease occurring. A Â frequency of 174 Hz can relieve pain and stress. A frequency of 963 Hz can create an experience of oneness and unity. You can find out more
about Solfeggio Frequencies on the internet. Â
Â
Nature: Observing nature with all our senses, whether we are sitting or walking, has the ability to relax and rejuvenate us. When we are immersed in nature, we smell the perfume and freshness in the air, we hear the sounds of the birds and running water, we see the beauty, we touch
the textures of the trees, flowers and plants. We might even taste the flowers, plants or water. The relaxation and beauty help to transport us beyond mundane thought and allow us to get a glimpse into the longing of the soul.Â
Â
Movement: Dancing, walking in silence, jogging and sports that get you in the "zone" can all be vehicles where we transcend mundane thoughts to a place of inner knowing and peace. Have you ever gotten into the "zone" through movement?Â
Â
Mindfulness is mental training that tries to teach you how to slow down racing thoughts, let go of negativity, and calm the mind and body. It can be practiced while doing routine activities or during a seated meditation involving the breath and body awareness. Mindfulness wants
us to stop and pay attention to the present moment. Observe our thoughts, feelings and emotions. Take a breath. And accept ourself and the present moment. Many people I've spoken with have found the practice of mindfulness to be exhausting. It doesn't allow one to just "BE", which is our natural state, although it is always beneficial to become more aware of our thoughts, feelings and emotions.Â
Â
The Transcendental Meditation technique is unique among the various types of meditation in that there is absolutely no trying to empty the mind, no mindfulness or monitoring of thoughts, no concentrating, no control of the mind. It is this type of meditation that I do twice daily.
Each time I am eager to sit to do this meditation because it is so refreshing and relieves my stress and anxiety. There is no focus on the breath or chanting. It is a silent meditation. It is absolutely effortless and natural, and uses the natural tendency of the mind to go towards more bliss. You can find more information here for Canada, or search the internet for Transcendental Meditation and the name of
your country.Â
Â
The Breath is our connection to our soul and spirit. The breath is our life. When we inhale we are inhaling not only oxygen but also prana, which is the universal life force energy. How is the breath used as a meditation? Our breath is our
guide, our wisdom, our knowledge. First we need awareness of our normal way of breathing. Once we have this awareness we can then consciously change our breath to produce the desired change in the state of our body or mind. There are many breath meditations that I teach in my role as a Kundalini Yoga Teacher. When we start consciously breathing, we will tap into all the answers held by our spirit. I call it the Breath of Spirit.
