And so now we have entered Vata season, in the northern hemisphere. How do we know that? Check the weather...Vata season is all about cold (brrrr), movement/wind (more brrrr), dryness and roughness (think dried up
leaves and skin and constipation), lightness (as in ungrounded), and changeability (weather can change from day to day, hour to hour). These qualities can leave us feeling anxious/uncertain, hyperactive thoughts, restless, constipation or irregular elimination in frequency or form, dry skin.
The remedy? We use the principle of opposites to balance. Thus to balance Vata and its qualities, we introduce the opposite qualities - warmth, oiliness, smoothness, heaviness, regularity and stability. Plus moisture inside and out.
Firstly, SIP boiled hot water. This alleviates the feeling of coldness inside and of never being able to get warm. Get yourself a
stove top kettle that you can boil for 10 minutes. This makes the water lighter and easier to digest. Keep the boiled water in a thermos and SIP it throughout the day, 1/4 cup every half hour, that's about three mouthfuls. If hot water is uncomfortable for your tummy, then drink it lukewarm.
Secondly, take as much rest as you can, without electronic devices. Lie down, close the eyes, or sit and read a book. But take time to rest. Go to bed earlier, 10 PM is ideal because after 10 PM the circadian rhythm of the body flips into a more active state and you could be up several more hours. Resting calms and grounds the nervous system, and will help alleviate a racing mind.
