Hello again , I hope all is well with you, in these times of change. I've found this American company, MindTools, very useful,
especially for career and management issues. It was really helpful when I working as an apprenticeship trainer. There is a paid membership, but they do have a lot of free resources, especially if you sign up for their newsletter, and the free download that you get on sign up is excellent in helping you analyse your situation, in ways that I have already described in previous issues. They provide many self assessment quizzes, some of them free, and they also have a free newsletter like me. It's well presented and you can use the free workbook on your own or as part of one to one coaching, to increase your accountability and thus the likelihood of success. I've had another look at their site today as I write, and I'm still very impressed.
Body language is ambiguous...
|
There's a lot out there about how to communicate with your body language, some more dubious than others if you're aiming to influence your audience for nefarious purposes! It's a huge
subject, and don't even get me started on differing cultural interpretations of the same gesture! (I'll tell you about my embarrassing moment in a Greek village shop some other time.) It's easy to draw the wrong conclusions about what people have intended, consciously or otherwise, and so
I was intrigued to see this from the BPS. It's been thought that 'expansive' postures - arms out or akimbo, head up and so on, reliably signal Dominance, by taking up a lot of the available social space. However, researchers have systematically investigated this and suggested that such postures can also signal Joy and Awe, which are very different to Dominance. You can read more on the link. So next time we see someone taking up all the sofa, they might not be planning world domination!
The heart is not just a pump
|
Today I am recommending one of many fascinating books about the human heart. Sure, it is a pump and does circulate our blood supply, but there is more! Anatomically it is full of neurones - at least 40,000 -
that communicate with the head and the gut to create what's caused 'heart intelligence'. Many, if not all, languages recognise this - we speak of 'the heart knows'. 'I feel it in my heart', I am heart-broken', 'I am speaking from my heart'. I am sure you can think of many more. This book, The HeartMath Solution marries perennial wisdom with modern science, to provide 'a systematic
way to consciously activate and develop this heart intelligence', leading to 'energy efficiency, increased coherence, enhanced awareness and greater productivity'. Who doesn't want some of that!
Latest goings-on at This Coaching Business
|
- I'm really enjoying retaking the updated Neuroscience for Coaches programme, and it reminds me of all sorts of useful things I can share with you. I'll be planning next year's content soon, and I am thinking of having the theme of how neuroscience can help us increase our
effectiveness, resilience and general well-being. If you like the sound of that, do let me know!
- Another reminder about Harrison Assessments, which I
described in one of my March issues. The assessment consists of a short 'smart' questionnaire which indicates your traits, such as Optimistic, Authoritative, Influencing, and about 170 others. It's
set up so that it's impossible to give contradictory answers, and it is reliable. On this is based dozens of possible reports across the whole HR area, from recruitment to succession planning and more. Coaching is then based on this information. I can now offer this at a considerably reduced price - contact me for more details.
- As climate change continues to get more and more urgent, I'm still doing my best to spread the word about this. If you haven't already, do please consider joining my free updated list, as well as checking out my climate coaching packages
in my Shop. And I hope the UK government will not go ahead with fracking!
- I'm creating downloadable exercises and worksheets on my website here, to give you a taste of what you might get when you work with me. I've revised the first one, about working out your values and what needs to be in place for you to honour them. The
next one will be about where to start, when you know something's got to change! Meanwhile if you think of something else you'd like, for issues that face you right now, let me know and I'll prioritise it.
- If you're thinking of working personally with me, I always recommend that we first have a free intro call to make sure coaching is right for you before we start. If I don't think it is, I'll say so and try to signpost you to what else would be helpful. I'm limiting my one to one work at the moment due to a family illness but I do still have space for two or three clients over the next
month.
- You can see all my coaching packages and e-books on this link here to my shop, and you can check my availability on the (updated) button below. And if you can't see a suitable time, contact me anyway and I'll do my best to find one for you.
And here is my Linktree, about everything that I'm involved in, on the first button below. Plus the three free
quizzes, that help you to pinpoint where you can best make changes in your situation. You can repeat them for free whenever you like to see your progress over time. That's about it for today, - have a good weekend, keep safe, and I'll be in touch again in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, enjoy your weekend! All best
wishes, Barbara P.S. if you like this update and
