Have you heard of the ultimate human stem cell? It's found in the bone marrow of adults and can transform itself into almost any organ of the body. True story!
How about the interstitium? The interstitium is a body wide organ, comprised of fluid filled spaces in connective tissues all over the body. It is found below the skin's surface, in the lining of the lungs, digestive tract, surrounding muscles, and urinary system.
It's a massive communication system in our body, and is thought to play a role in the spread of cancer and in the efficacy of acupuncture.
Last question: do you know what these two, physiological phenomena have in common?
They were discoveries made by teams of scientists led by Dr. Neil Theise, of NYU Grossman School of Research.
We are extremely fortunate to have Neil coming to the temple on Tuesday, July 25th at 7pm to discuss something called Complexity
Aside from being a brilliant scientist and liver pathologist, Neil is a student of Zen, a meditator, and yoga practitioner. He has recently published a book called
"Notes on Complexity: A Scientific Theory of Connection, Consciousness, and
Being." It is a beautiful book, comprehensible, insightful, and illuminating. In a slim volume
of 170 pages, Neil brings us on a journey from the origin of complexity and emergent self-organizing principles of consciousness to the organization of our cells, molecules, atoms, and into the metaphysics of being through the lens of science.
While it sounds daunting, he truly shows us that it's not. Complexity are the patterns within a dynamic,
cohesive, and alive universe that we are all expressions of.
During this talk, I'll lead a discussion with Neil on Complexity Theory, and then he will guide us through a meditation.
I highly encourage you to come, or attend online. I know Neil through Dr. Deepak Chopra, who refers to Neil as one of the most brilliant scientists that he's ever
met. He's a tremendously excellent human being, and I, for one, am very excited about this talk.
This is a free event, and Neil's book will be available for sale. Please register here (in-person or online). This will be recorded, and available for
replay for those who register.
