Should we stop teaching computation in math class because we will always have calculators available to us, literally in our pockets?
Â
Most people would agree, no. Getting “the answer“ isn’t the only objective of math. It’s also about understanding numbers and critical thinking and problem solving. It’s about the learning process — the struggle, the asking questions, the new brain connections being made. It’s not just about knowing the answer but also LEARNING something, and taking ownership of the learning to figure it out not just outsource it to a calculator.
Â
Less outsourcing. More ownership.
Â
And yet, even when it comes to important “subjects” like our own bodies and health… that there are no one-size-fits-all calculations for… we
seek to outsource that learning instead of taking OWNERSHIP of the learning.
Â
Know that if you work with me in my Virtual Wellness Studio, I will continually bring that former-math-teacher mindset to your health and fitness journey. I will push you to take ownership of your health, to dig in and find answers for your own
body, and not just tell you what to do.
Â
Less outsourcing. More ownership.
Â
Sure, there’s guidance and support and help and accountability— just
like a teacher in a math class, but one-size-fits-all solutions don't exist inside my Wellness Studio.
Â
So be prepared to get comfortable in the struggle of the learning process (it’s just part of learning anything new!). Be prepared to shift your mindset from perfection to progress; from quick fix to long term
solution.
Â
Will you ever be ready for it? No. Ready is a lie. There will always be some fear there. Do it scared.
