Have you ever thought - “my metabolism is slowing down?”
I bet you have. I think most of us have to some degree.
After completing my university basketball career I gained a significant amount of weight. I couldn’t believe it. I immediately started to learn about metabolic rate and what
internal and external factors impact it.
In my upcoming course, Metabolism Healing 101, I want to share what I have learned with you. Here is a snapshot:
What is metabolism? Metabolism is the sum total of all the energetic reactions the body uses to sustain life/movement/activity - It is measured by total calories burned. Ie. fuel used to run these processes. This takes into account anabolic reactions (building things like muscle) and catabolic reactions (breaking down things like food, fat and old cells). My job is to make understanding this process simple.
How does metabolism change as we age? “Before the age of 60 metabolic rate doesn’t change.” There is 1 caveat here… amount of muscle is the major factor determining rate of calorie burn. If your muscle doesn’t change metabolism doesn’t change but if you lose muscle it declines.
Can we boost metabolism? Yes! Metabolism can be influenced positively by the actions we take every day - in our course we discuss sleep, stress reduction, muscle building, post exercise “afterburn”, etc. If will be a great conversation!
