In today's episode we talk all things metabolism and metabolic rate. Dr. Duizer does resting metabolic rate and active metabolism tests in his clinic. His experience in completing these tests has enabled him to help solve some of the most difficult weight-loss cases out there.
For any of you who have had a difficult time either losing weight or keeping it off this episode is for you. Metabolic testing opens the window to appropriate treatment for weight loss. Finding the right mixture of exercise and nutrition becomes simple with the data available from a metabolic test.
Today we talk about fat max training, VO2 Max enhancement and progressive overload. We discuss how to improve resting metabolic rate and get the most out of each training session.
Here are some of the details from today's episode:
Some of the key topics covered today include:
- PNOE Metabolic Rate Testing - At Dr. Duizer's clinic patients are able to have their metabolic rate tested. This tells them at the current body weight how many calories they burn per day. This is valuable because it tells us if the patient burns more or less calories than the average person of the same weight and height.
- PNOE Active Metabilism Testing - During the same test Dr. Duizer uses exercise to determine when patients are burning fats and carbohydrates. This shows if the patient burns a sufficient amount of calories during exercise (and whether easier or harder exercise helps them burn more calories).
- Fasting Insulin Testing - Having this test done informs if the patient is insulin resistant or not. We can then take steps to improve sensitivity to insulin.
- Of the three types of exercise (strenght, HIIT, steady state) for most people with difficulty burning calories strength training helps increase metabolic rate the most.
- For fat burning during exercise - steady state cardio training at "fat max" heart rate seems to help burning fat the most.
- For overall wellness high intensity interval training helps in a significant way by increasing heart and lung health.
