I was just talking the other day about how close I
was to a lifetime PR on Press.
While that didn't end up happening Monday, Wednesday's workout featured a highlight I'm pretty excited about.
Wednesday was Max Effort Deadlift Day and I was feeling great after about 3 months of my hips giving me some serious trouble including my right leg going numb after driving for about 10 minutes, and being unable to sleep on my right
side.
For the last handful of months, I've had to stay away from the actual Deadlift off the floor because of my hip issues, but after several solid weeks of stretching, foam rolling, and mobility work, I felt golden Wednesday.
So I went after a new Lifetime PR of 570lbs on the Deadlift, and was able to get it.
Lifetime PR - 570lbs on Deadlift
If you're wondering why I'm deadlifting with straps, it comes down to a few things:
- I can't supinate my arms due to 20+ years of Grip Training
- I do not want to try to regain that supination
- I do not want to risk a biceps tear
- Going Double
Overhand without straps doesn't allow for consistent lower back/posterior chain training, which is the point of the Deadlift.
- I train Grip every other day and DO DL affects my Grip and Grip Training affects my DO DL, adding to the inconsistency of my top end Deadlift performance
- I have ZERO plans of competing in a Powerlifting Meet, so there's no reason NOT to use straps
With all these things in mind, I just go with straps. I just don't care
anymore.
The most important thing I'm trying to communicate is that I know there are a lot of older dudes following this newsletter and my YouTube channel, and I want you all to know that just because you hit 30, 35, 40, 45 or more, you don't have to give up on your strength goals.
If you train smart and always work to refine your program, you can keep hitting better numbers
throughout your lifting career.
I feel very strongly about this and that's why I've been sending out messages like this so much lately.
If you need help with your training and programming because you feel that time is working against you at your current age, then I urge you to send me a message.
I think I can help
you to get back on the right track. Just email me back.
