How weight gain sneaks up.......

Published: Wed, 03/20/24

If your body weight has increased over the years, it’s no shame.

Weight gain “sneaks up on our bodies,” many times gradually and for different reasons.
No matter how we get there, we CAN lose it and get our bodies back!

In a study of 13,800 Americans, scientists report that over 50 percent of participants gained at least 5 percent in body weight during the previous 10 years.

(Thirty-five percent gained 10 percent or more, and 16 percent gained 20 percent or more.)

You might be thinking, "So what?"

And you’re right: What’s fascinating is WHEN people gained body weight.

💥 On average, participants gained the most weight from their 20s to about age 40.

So, for “the so-called active years,” the average individual weight gain was 30+ pounds and then less in each subsequent decade.

20s to 30s: +17.6 pounds (7.8 kg)
30s to 40s: +14.3 pounds (6.4 kg)
40s to 50s: +9.5 pounds (4.3 kg)
50s to 60s: +4.6 pounds (2.1 kg)
60s to 70s: +0.7 pounds (0.3 kg)

Here’s how one of my clients “took action:”

“Mark has been a positive and supportive coach for me over the years. I have lost 100 pounds due to eating healthy foods and exercise. I am now currently training for my first Triathlon next year due to his encouragement and belief in me!”    Thanks again for all of your support Mark!!!   –Jen K.

💥 Why do people gain more weight when they’re younger?

It’s likely because your metabolism increases when you gain weight. (Larger bodies require more energy to operate than smaller bodies.)

Over time, we tend to “settle in” and habitually eat the same amount or more (and/or decreased daily physical activity and exercise levels).

Positive energy balance (eating more calories than you burn) gives us weight gain.

💥 Bottom line:  MOVE FORWARD!
What do you need to do TODAY to start improving your health and get your body back!?

Keep eating better and moving more!
