Issue #501 - Sunday, November 21, 2021
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Anyone who has grown their own weed knows that it's one of the most rewarding experiences you can achieve on a regularly. So, how rewarding would it be if you also produced your own seeds so you wouldn't have to buy them? You'd be one step closer to a completely self-sufficient cannabis supply. So cool!
- Which strain breeders can you trust? Check out the list of breeders I use the most, and let us know which breeder made your favorite genetics!
- Did you know that long-time nutrient maker Fox Farm just released a new nutrient trio that's been designed specifically for cannabis plants? I know which nutrients I plan to test out next grow!
- Get an update on Nebula's side-by-side grow journal featuring topped vs naturally grown auto-flowering plants. The two tents look COMPLETELY different from last week. Check out the latest update! Also, since this grow will be wrapping up around Christmas, I'd like to hear what you want to see me test next!
- Beefy, frosty buds are the theme of this week's "Trophy Pics of the Week". Coincidentally, everyone sent pics of cannabis plants that look ultra-sticky and probably weigh as much as a small child. Check out the pictures below and get inspired after you're done drooling.

How to Make Feminized Seeds at Home 🌱➕🚺➡🏡

Introduction to Feminizing Your Own Cannabis Seeds
First of all, what are “feminized” marijuana seeds? Although male and female plants look the same when young, only female cannabis plants make buds. Male cannabis plants grow non-potent pollen sacs instead. Male plants also lower yields and cause seedy buds if they’re left among your female plants for too long. Because male plants don’t make buds and their presence reduces the quality of buds, most growers toss male plants the moment they see pollen
sacs forming. However, since about half of regular cannabis seeds end up being male, that means you end up tossing half your plants once they start flowering.
Feminized seeds come from two female plants being bred together, causing all offspring to be female (which means every plant makes buds)
While regular seeds make female plants about half the time, feminized seeds only create female plants. That means you won’t need to toss half the plants once they start flowering. But how are feminized seeds made and can you make them at home?
Feminized seeds are created by breeding two female plants together and collecting the resulting seeds. Because there are no male parents, all the seeds produce bud-bearing female plants. With feminized seeds, you can count on every plant to produce buds. Learn more about male vs female plants and feminization.
But how can a grower make feminized seeds at home? It's surprisingly easy. Basically you spray your female plants with a a specific substance while buds are forming. This creates special pollen that will produce feminized seeds with any plant it pollinates...
Did you know Fox Farm released new nutrients?
|
|
Fox Farm (a nutrient company) has been serving the cannabis community as long as I've been growing. Their classic nutrient trio is suitable for most flowering plants and has produced an abundance of beautiful cannabis buds over the years.
However, I learned from a reader that Fox Farm recently released a new 3-part nutrient trio called Cultivation Nation which can be used in soil, coco, or hydro. Unlike the original trio, this one was designed specifically for cannabis plants.
I'm not affiliated with Fox Farm in any way, but I've had good results with their old trio and I want to try their new cannabis-specific version. Have any of you tried it yet?
If not, what's your current favorite nutrient system?

Which Strain Breeders Can Be Trusted?
|
|
Platinum Cookies (pictured here) is something special! But with THC levels that hit 28%, make sure you don’t have anything else planned for the day.
Learn about American breeders who do experimental "crosses" like Ethos or produce ultra-sparkly luxury buds like Square One Genetics. Discover recommended autoflowering breeders like Bomb Seeds or Mephisto, and find out which breeders capture clone-only strains in seed form like BlimBurn.
And don't hesitate to reply to this email and let us know who your favorite (and least-favorite) breeders are! We'll share your favorites next week.

Auto-Flowering Grow Journal: Week 5
|
|
Week 5 - The untouched autoflowering plants are significantly bigger and taller than their siblings that were topped in week 3.
|
Wow, what a difference a week makes. Major contrasts between the tent are now easy to see.
Some untouched plants are almost double the height of the plants that were topped. They also just seem bigger overall. It’s obvious that the topped plants were stunted in some way (whether that’s good or bad in the end, we will see).
I used lines to indicate the top of the tallest plant in each tent. The topped plants (left) are relatively short while the untouched plants (right) are still getting taller every day.
The other major difference is the plants that were topped seem to be further along into the flowering stage. It’s like the shock of being topped put flowering into overdrive...
One other thing... These plants should be ready to harvest before New Years so I'm already thinking about what to grow next.
Some ideas for the next grow journal:
- Grow light comparison: Test different grow lights against each other
- Pot size comparison: Grow clones in a solo cup, 1-gallon, 3-gallon and 5-gallon pots. How much of a difference will pot size make when everything else is equal?
- Scrog vs Manifold: using a screen vs manifolding to control plant shape
- Defoliation experiment: Test defoliation vs letting plants grow naturally
- Autoflowering vs photoperiod versions of same strain; how do buds compare in the end?
- Hydroponics vs soil: Which grow medium produces the best weed?
- Anything else you want to see!
Respond to this email and let us know which one you'd like to see next, or send us your ideas!
Love,
Nebula
P.S. I'm thinking about growing Purple Punch after seeing these nugs, what do you think?
Seed Sources... This week's updates!
|
|
Which seed banks produce plants that delight?
|
Last week I asked you all about Nirvana Seeds. Some of you ordered from their new US-based website and let us know that although seeds are getting shipped normally, they no longer send seeds in official breeder packs. Overall, the feedback we got was neutral.
Recommended Cannabis Seed Sources
These sources have gotten the best reviews from our readers lately:
- Seed Supreme – California, United States
- ILGM (I Love Growing Marijuana) – California, United States
- Herbies Seeds – Europe (seemingly out of Spain)
- We're still looking for a consistent Canadian Seed Bank. We've gotten a few suggestions but unfortunately they've also gotten bad reviews from other growers.

"Like everyone else who writes in I also appreciate the information you provide as it has resulted in an improvement in my growing skills. (Getting your email to read in its entirety is a Sunday morning ritual that I look forward to each week!)
But here is a compliment that I haven’t seen in the Look Who’s Talking section: Thank you for the Sense of Community you have created! I live in an area where I can not share my excitement about cannabis growing nor celebrate the similar accomplishments of others. So Many Thanks and keep up your great work that we all enjoy together : )"
~Craig
I don't know what to say besides thank you. Emails like this mean so much to us 💚 ~Sirius
"[...] Your info is essential, interesting and easy to understand. Thank you."
~Dennis
That's a massive compliment if you've ever learned a skill from a book 😅 ~Sirius

"2 runtz muffins 2 weeks out from the chop. Looking very frosty. Slightly slower growth and flower than other strains but amazing quality. Topped and manifolded for maximum bud sites. I read almost every article on this site when I first started 3 years ago. This is my 6th grow. I've gotten at least 1 pound per tent every
single grow. Thanks so much for all the awesome information you guys have put out there. Growing is so much fun and enjoyable. I dont even smoke anymore. I have a sick friend."
~Dukethomcat
It's heartwarming to hear you're growing for a friend. They're lucky to have a buddy like you. ~Sirius

"Frosty Gelato autos, no training whatsoever on these. My first run of autos. They’re huuuge!"
~Michael
They look huge and those pistils look like they're out looking for trouble! 😨 ~Sirius
~Tinojr57
I've seen a few pics of these plants and I can't wait to see what the buds end up looking like after trimming and curing ⌚ ~Sirius
"Hello Nebula and Sirius. I hope you are both doing great. I want to share pictures of my first grow where I have used only my new MarsHydro 2000 throughout the entire process.
I usually veg under my T5s then switch but thanks to Nebula's trial grow with the two lights, I went for it. I am so pleased with the results and think I still have a couple of weeks left before harvest. The plants are Seedsman Blueberry (left) and Gelot OG (right). Grown in
Happy Frog soil and Green Planet nutrients (with every water :))
Thank you (again) for your amazing information and guidance. Keep up the great work."
~Sandra
Hey, Sandra! Your plants look so beefy I had to make them into a .gif. This is another one I'd like to see when they're all jarred up. ~Sirius

Watch Out for Seed Scams!
|
|
You never know who's on the other side of the keyboard!
Be on guard against private messages from unknown accounts
Did you know there are tons of seed scams on social media? Many seed scammers will slide into your DMs and ask if you want seeds. Avoid ordering seeds from an unknown account. You can't always trust people to be who they say they are!
Better options
- Contact the seed breeder through their official social media account
- Check the breeder's website for a list of sources, a contact form, or newsletter signup (many breeders sell seeds via email)
- Ask a trusted grower where they got their genetics
- Otherwise, here's our current list.

Bag Seed vs Hype Seed: Is it worth it to buy cannabis seeds? - This is a question that's as old as growing in the modern era. The short answer is: Yes. You can get lucky with bagseed, which is cool because some people are unable to get their hands on good seeds. But if you can, get good genetics via seeds (or
clones).

How to Pollinate Cannabis - What's that you say? You're tired of all this new-fangled plant breeding, and you want to do it the old-fashioned way? No problem! You'll get roughly 50% male seeds/plants, but I'm told it's been that way for a few years.
- Cannabis Breeding Techniques (Advanced) - Many growers who are considering making feminized seeds are looking for the ability to breed their own strains and crosses. If you're a detail-oriented type of person who wants to get into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to make a strain, this page is for you.
