What Can I Do as a Master Herbalist?-Daniel Atkin M.H.

Congratulations! You did it! You are now a Master Herbalist (or somewhere along your journey of becoming one). Now what? The School of Natural Healing offers a world-class herbal education that is so practical you can immediately apply your knowledge to the health of your family and friends. However, you can't change the world by only serving your family and friends. Armed with a wealth of knowledge and a degree in hand to prove it, many Master Herbalists wonder how they can turn their education into a career and affect the lives of thousands. There's no state licensing for herbalists anywhere, and it's a legal nightmare to tiptoe around all the laws that prevent you from helping the sick. I'd like to share my personal experience and an idea with all of the Master Herbalists out there and to anyone else considering becoming one.

I love the word vitalism. Vitalism is the understanding and principle that all living systems are self-organizing, self-developing, self-maintaining and self-healing. In short, the body is designed to heal itself. I have only heard of two schools that proudly use vitalism as a foundational basis for their philosophy: Life University College of Chiropractic and The School of Natural Healing. I love chiropractic and I love herbs so I graduated as a Master Herbalist last summer and graduate from chiropractic school this summer. Chiropractic and herbs make the perfect combination.

To understand where I'm coming from, you have to understand a little bit about chiropractic. The body is designed to heal itself. Interference in the nervous system, known as subluxation, can prevent that healing from taking place. Chiropractors specialize in removing subluxations and restoring the communication between the brain and the rest of the body so that the body can heal from the inside out. With that communication restored, all the body needs is the proper building blocks to rebuild itself and the right nutrition to function optimally. Once again, the School of Natural Healing provides a world-class education on healthy eating and how to use herbs to rebuild the body.

Chiropractors are lucky if they get a course or two in nutrition at school, but it's nothing compared to the education you get at the School of Natural Healing. While some chiropractors try to figure nutrition out on their own, most of them have no idea what they're doing. However, within their scope of practice is the ability to recommend nutritional products as part of their patient's care plan. As a result, supplement companies bombard them with information and try to get them to sell their products, which many of them do. Again, most of them don't really know what they're doing and would love to have somebody else handle that side of the business.

Master Herbalists, this is where you come in. Get online and go to Google Maps. Type in "chiropractors near (enter the city you live in)". Check out their website to see who they are and what their philosophy is. Write down the names and addresses of the ten chiropractors closest to your house. Then, write a Letter of Introduction. Make it formal, but not too formal, your personality and voice should shine through. Explain who you are and what your background and education is. Tell them you would love to meet with them at their office or during their lunch break to discuss how your skills could enhance the health of their patients as well as generate additional revenue for their office. Then mail it out (address the envelope in your own handwriting so they'll actually open it) to 10 or 20 or 50 chiropractors and you'll be amazed at the doors of opportunity that will open up! Working under the credentials of a licensed chiropractor will remove some of the legal restraints and allow you to transform the health of your community in the way that you've always wanted to!

State laws vary, so please be sure to educate yourself on the unique circumstances that exist in your state.

Daniel Atkin is a Master Herbalist and future owner of Family Focus Chiropractic in Holly Springs, NC. He will be opening his practice in the fall of 2014 and looking to hire a Master Herbalist.
