Coffee, Cake, and Culture |

While in Sweden researching inspiring workplace cultures, several managers told me about the concept of a daily Swedish workplace ritual called 'fika' where everyone gathers at the same time for coffee and cake (I mean, come on, you have
to have cake!) These informal gatherings allow employees at every level and from every department to intermix and the managers claim they're one of the best ways to find out what's really going on in the office.
This may sound like nothing more than a coffee break with a dab of icing on top, but I think there are some important differences. First, there's the ritualized aspect of it. Framing it as a ritual or tradition helps turn it into a habit, it reinforces the importance of taking regular breaks and connecting with colleagues, and it sends a powerful message about your culture.
Ensuring a relaxed atmosphere and having everyone break at the same time is also important. Taking breaks at the same time (not always possible, I know) helps everyone enjoy a guilt-free break and it encourages social bonding and a sense of community. Too often in our busy workplaces people either forgo taking breaks or they take them alone.
It's especially important for employees who are working remotely and missing out on feeling connected to the rest of the team - so yes, you could and should include a virtual or hybrid element when you fika it up in your office. (Please note: "fika it up" is not a recognized phrase in Swedish circles.)

It's the season for "Out of Office" email messages, so why not make yours stand out with a little humor?
It could be a funny quote ("Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy.” Regina Brett), a humorous line about how your children kidnapped you and are holding you captive in Disneyland, or funny detailed instructions on how they could track you down in person. And if you have a funny out of office message you've used or have come across, please pass them along!
