Concord Carpenter Photographer Ethan Bickford, and I spent Saturday volunteering carpentry repairs with college student volunteers at Camp Allen New
Hampshire, a private, non-profit, residential summer camp for individuals with cognitive, physical and/or developmental disabilities.
The program is called, "Ability weekend," formerly known as Push Weekends, are national service projects that provide funding and manpower to build and renovate structures for camps and facilities serving the disability community. Members of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity from various universities construct accessible
fishing piers, boardwalks, pavilions, playgrounds and more in an effort to highlight the abilities of people with disabilities. The work done will help enhance the lives of people with disabilities while also building bonds of brotherhood.
Our trail-fence building, college crew, were all hearing-impaired, we had so much fun communicating, them making fun of us, and I really do think they enjoyed working with our carpentry tools!
The camp boasts a 1:2 counselor to camper ratio, everything goes to the campers and as a result the facilities need donations for repairs.
Please consider donating or joining our work crew in the spring!
