A Concord Carpenter - Promoting best practices in the remodeling industry

Concord Carpenter Workshop News

Hi Guys,

I'm on a plane headed to Raleigh NC airport to bring my oldest to college.  He's attending Elon University.  I'm excited to see him make this next chapter of his life, I'm also looking forward to checking out some southern architecture.

The picture above with the cat descending the ladder, was taken by on the ACC carpenters Bill, while working on a residential repair job.  Too funny!

Leadership  - the Build America Experience

The ACC crew has signed up to train and mentor next years 2015 Build Americas team.

It was amazing to follow these kids as they traveled from summer camp to camp building accessible recreation for people with disabilities.

I especially enjoyed all the Facebook postings after the team members parted, were home and reflecting back on their experience.

The Build America program reflects ethos of service & leadership.  It is life hanging for these kids and something that we at Concord Carpenter strongly support.

Speaking of leadership.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.  There are several public perception things that you should be constantly focused on and monitoring, they are:

  1. Your website
  2. Recruiting talented workers
  3. Turnover
  4. Client relations
  5. Validation
  6. Adopt humility

Fall Lawn Care Tips

By the time fall rolls around most people are done with lawn care.

Fall is the perfect time to seed as well as give your lawn the a head start to a lush, thriving, green start in the spring.

The ConcordCarpenter crew put together 6-tips to get you started.    You can access these tips here, and other tips and articles on the ACC website, "Lawn and Garden section."

Carpenter's Tip

A client recently asked me to look at her door.  Her complaint was that she could close and lock the door at the knob but had to put her shoulder into the door to get the deadbolt to lock.

While some might say this keeps the door closed tight and keeps the draft out, she was not able to unlock this deadbolt from the exterior, using her key.  That was a problem!

There's more than one way to skin a cat

There are a few ways to approach this scenario, such as relocating the deadbolt or strike plate so one aligns better with the other.

I chose a simpler approach.  Using a mill file I simply file off a small amount of the deadbolt plate on the interior side until it latches effortlessly.

When doing this you need to continually close the door and engage the deadbolt, file a little more, test, file.   You know when you have shaved off enough metal when the deadbolt closes easily and the key works well.

Remember - A little bit goes a long way!!!!
