Concord Carpenter Workshop News

Hi Guys,

As 2014 winds down, and winter gears up, we wanted to focus this weeks newsletter on winter and holiday safety.

I have some exciting news to share.   The Boston Globe recently approached Concord Carpenter and asked if I would be interested in writing a Sunday, carpentry and DIY, column.   I agreed and am starting January 2015.

In this weekly article, I will be responding to reader submitted questions, providing pragmatic, realistic advice, and updated industry information.   Tool reviews will also be included and who knows I may even sprinkle in some humor - so beware.   I’m not afraid to give my opinion, but when I do, I make sure it’s based in fact – so keep an eye out for me!

We are in the midst of preparing our 2015 Head-2-Head testing list, and are open to suggestions.

Simply email me your thoughts.  ~ ROB

Dryer Fires and Dirty Dryer Ducts

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that over 15,000 dryer-related fires occur each year, causing an estimated $ 97 million in property loss.

Clothing lint builds up inside the dryer vent, on the heating element and in other places in the dryer, reducing airflow, cause it to run hotter, overheat, waste energy and very possibly catch on fire.

By cleaning your dryer vent regularly, you increase airflow efficiency, decrease cost of dryer operation, reduce the amount of time required for clothes drying and prevent plug ups which cause dryer vent fires.  Learn How to Clean Dryer Vents

Texting and Driving

According to a CDC study, 31 percent of drivers are sending or receiving text messages while behind the wheel.

What's worse, that number triples when drivers 18 to 24.

Texting and Driving Can Be a Lethal Combination

Reading or writing text messages increases the risk of an accident by 2,300 percent.

But you don’t have to be typing away to be at risk of having or causing an accident:

  • Drivers who use mobile devices are four times more likely to have an accident and injure themselves or others.
  • Using a cell phone while driving is the equivalent of having a blood alcohol concentration level of .08 percent, the legal limit in most states.
  • Using a cell phone can reduce the brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent.

Tips for Changing Your Habits

Habits can be hard to break, but these tips can help you get started:

  • Turn off your phone before driving away, or store it somewhere where you can’t reach it.
  • If you have an urgent call you need to attend, find a safe place to park before using your phone.
  • Ask another passenger to answer your calls or messages.
  • Designate a copilot that can help you use other electronics in the car such as your navigation system or the radio.
