Concord Carpenter Workshop News

Hi Guys,

I have not published a newsletter since before the World of Concrete [WOC] trade show.  Things around here have been pretty busy with over 6 feet of snow in 3 weeks.

The WOC show was great, with some pretty amazing new tools, check out the ToolBoxBuzz Facebook page for photos of this event.    Bosch showed us an incredible new tool, that we cant tell you about yet.  I promise you this - your going to be amazed and astounded!

Some of the new tools from Bosch that I can mention are a new 12 volt jig saw, an affordable and durable self-leveling rotary laser, plus a new and improved power planer and miter saw.

I was pretty excited about their release of their 18-volt, 6.0 Ah battery.  This Bosch BAT622 FatPack battery promises to increase productivity for every trade professional by offering the power tool industry’s first 6.0 Ah battery, offering up to 45% more run-time over standard 4.0 Ah packs.

Here are two videos highlighting the Bosch new tools and their media event.

Both Makita and Hilti also had some sweet, new, tool releases.  We visited their booth and spent some time with their new tools.  See below.

Makita had some very impressive new tools from an electric breaker to a twin tank compressor, a newly designed circular saw, cool and innovative accessories, concrete cutting / drilling  tools and  and some sexy, new impacts.

The Hilti SF 10W-A18 cordless drill driver was impressive.  It is designed for  high torque and high-speed applications.

In high torque applications like 4” hole saw drilling in wood or metal, this drill driver performs as if it were corded.  Our video shows Todd Fratzel and me in a race, punching 1” holes through multiple layers of plywood.

Can Your Roof Handle The Snow?

There seems to be a lot of talk lately, and certainly media coverage, on roof collapses due to snow loads. I’ve been involved in many conversations these past few days asking me whether I feel folks should shovel off their roof or not.

The critical factor in determining whether you have an excessive snow load on your roof isn’t the depth of the snow; it’s the weight of that snow.

Roof Shoveling Safety Tips

WARNING!

Performing ice dam and snow removal is risking severe personal injury and damage to yourself and the roof if not done properly.  Make sure if your using a ladder you follow the proper safety procedures. I use a ladder with an attached standoff, making sure the standoff touches the roof and is embedded above the ice, and into snow.  I also tie off the ladder when applicable or use an eye hook into the building.

Note - its BEST to use "fall Arrest" gear on any roof.

Once on the roof, I leave a 2-3 foot barrier of snow between me and along all of the roof edges. [see left side of photo]

Once the center of the roof is clear of snow I remove the edge barrier, little by little, by staying behind it and working back toward the ladder.   This method ensures that the barrier is always between me and the roofs edge,  in case I slip.  I then finish shoveling from the ladder.
