Cedar siding is beautiful and durable when properly installed. With homes being built extremely "tight" it's important to consider the interaction between the siding and how it deals with water and moisture that gets behind the siding.
Traditionally carpenters installed heavy tar paper behind siding and that worked quite well. However, when homes of that era were built they allowed
much more air movement and thus a way for the siding to dry out.
Today through the advancements in building materials we using products that create a drainage plane behind the siding to help allow water and moisture to dissipate quickly. Read on to learn how we used a new product to create a drainage plane on a house with new red cedar siding.
Most people think of using factory finished siding when they are considering using cement board siding. In my neck of the woods most of the homes are wood clad and I end up using a lot of cedar clapboards and shingles for siding these homes.
What many people don't realize is they can get wood siding with a factory finish on it of either primer, primer plus top coat, and even
stains. The factor finish ensures a much better first application on all siding of the siding which results in a much better performing paint system over the life of the siding. Read on to learn more about why I like prefinished siding.
We certainly love working with real wood siding and trim products. However, long term maintenance is a real concern for many of our clients who are often asking about products that lessen the maintenance burden.
One of the products that I've used on homes with great success is LP® SmartSide® Siding. As you can see from the picture above it's possible to have the home look like a
house with wood siding with the benefits of an engineered product designed to perform better in the harsh elements.
Read on to learn why I think LP® SmartSide® Siding is a great option for those wanting a product that holds up to the weather really well.
