Come Warm Up By The Fire

Hi Guys,

This week I'm putting the finishing touches on a couple live edge fireplace mantles on a recent house build. They were logs taken out of the woods on the property and milled with a chainsaw. As a carpenter, this isn't a task I do very often. As pros, many of our jobs are things we've done before or something similar. There are times though, like these mantles, where we have to draw on our experience and sheer determination to do something outside of our comfort zone. Meeting these challenges head on, and conquering them, will put you to the top of your customer's list.

In a future newsletter, we'll have a how-to article on milling logs into lumber in case you want to cull some of your own trees.

If you're new here or you've been reading since the beginning, we are glad you're here. If there's anything we can do differently or better this year, let us know in the Survey.

Gas or Wood Burning Fireplace?
Image
When building a new house you may be thinking about a fireplace. Two choices come to mind, gas or wood? Depending on your area, natural gas may not be readily available. Gas fireplaces are also available in propane but the cost of propane can get quite high in the winter, the months you would want to use the fireplace. Maybe wood is pretty cheap in your area or you can cut your own firewood.

If you're faced with these questions, we have a two-for-one for you. Here are a couple fireplace articles, one on gas and the other on wood burning to help you decide which way to go.

Replacing an Outdoor Light Fixture
Image

A few months ago, my family and I move into a new house. Well, a new to us house but pretty new as well. It was built in 2010-11 so it has all modern wiring, plumbing, and ventilation. Our last house was a complete fixer-upper but now that we have some kids there is a lot less time to work on projects so we opted for a completed domicile.

Five years is just about the time where some minor wear and tear starts to show up. Some items start to not work as well as they use to either because they’re wore out or maintenance was deferred. One such item for us was an outdoor light fixture out on the deck. For one reason or another, it developed a short and would flicker when it was turned on. I’m sure our neighbors thought we were either calling for help or having a dance party. Maybe you’re in a similar situation or your just looking for a change of outdoor lighting scenery. Either way, we’ll show you how to easy a task replacing an outdoor light fixture can be.

Milwaukee RedStick Level Review
Image

BOOM! Did you hear that? It was the shot across the bow Milwaukee was taking at the yellow-colored premium level brand. The Milwaukee RedStick is poised and positioned to compete with the Stabila 196 line of levels that many of us pros have come to rely on on the jobsite.

Stabila has been the king of the premium level segment for quite some time and it is quite a tall order to dethrone them. We tested the RedStick using all of the same methods that were employed in our recent Level Head-2-Head in order to be able to accurately compare it to the king. So how did it do? Read on for our thoughts.

Makita's Newest Cordless Circular Saw
Image
Last week we attended the World of Concrete in Las Vegas. It's a show we attend every year because the tool companies use it to announce some of their coolest new tools. This year's show didn't disappoint. Makita showed off their brand new rear-handle cordless circular saw. This unit is designed to give you worm-drive like power in a cordless package. We can't wait to get our hands on it.
