Silica Rule in T-minus 30 Days!

Hi Guys,

Today is the 1 month mark in the countdown to the new OSHA Silica Rule. I'm sure most of the concrete and masonry companies are pretty close to set up already. The guys that are working with the saws and grinders all day are probably using dustless setups mostly because they get tired of the dust all day. Try cutting out mortar joints in a confined space and you'll soon be a convert. I know I got tired of being covered in white dust, mortar infused boogers, and a pesky cough in the middle of summer. Dustless cutting and grinding is the only way to go.

The guys I worry about though are the ones only doing a few holes and cuts in a day. The carpenters and mechanical contractors, drilling and mounting things to concrete, are the ones that may not ready. They're only doing a few holes a day, in a rush, and don't take the time or money to invest in a whole dust mitigation solution. If this is you, first, you've got only a month to go. Second, we've included a couple articles below to help you make sense of the rule and the solutions that exist to be compliant.

Finally, this is the 100th edition of the combined newsletter. While we can't share a piece of cake through the internet, we've included a "treat" at the end to help celebrate. They are 3 of Robs oldest videos. Whether you've been here since the beginning or this is your first newsletter, thank you from all of us here. We hope that our content is just as useful to you now as it was the first time you came to the sites.

Milwaukee Dust Extraction Solutions

Image

A lot of construction companies are struggling to get in compliance with the new rule before next month. Milwaukee is releasing their full solution just in time. It includes grinder shrouds, rotary hammer shrouds, and even some universal solutions to fit on other tool brands.

At the heart of this solution is a rebranded Nilfisk Attix 33 tool-actuated vacuum. Nilfisk isn't a household name when it comes to tools but they make Makita and Mirka vacuums and maybe a couple other brands too. Either way, it's a darn good vacuum at 148 CFM and can hook up directly to Milwaukee's new dust collection shrouds.

Stihl FSA 56 Cordless Trimmer

In case you were tired of all the silica talk above, here's sometime completely different.

The Stihl FSA 56 cordless trimmer marks Stihl's first foray into cordless OPE aimed at the homeowner. At $199 kitted, it's a very competitive offering that packs a wallop out on the turf.

I used to be a detractor when it came to cordless OPE but now I'm a full fledged convert. Check it out!
