  • Ethical cheating or Ergogenic aids? (ESPN segment)
  • 40 Yard times are bogus!
  • Considering an Ultramarathon?
  • Best of September 2011

Greetings / Salve,

Last week, I was on ESPN “The Ticket” radio program and the topic was ethical cheating or ergogenic aids.  Basically, that is anything that improves performance that’s not on the IAAF list of banned substances.  Examples are coffee & caffeine; baking soda & beta alanines; nootropics (Red Bull, 5 hour energy shots); Viagra & nitric oxides; and increasing your natural EPO with IHT (Intermittent Hypoxic Training).

Yes, even sprinters take EPO!  It’s not for distance runners anymore.

We didn’t get into detail of each substance, whether it’s a natural food or supplement, as the show got sidetracked a few times.  This is ESPN, not the Discovery Channel!

I will however write on each topic in the next few weeks on the Blog, so they will appear in next month’s summary.

Here is the link to the radio show (fast forward to 14:40 for my segment):

40 Yard times are Bogus!

I guess I was popular last month as I was interviewed by the Dallas Morning News on the topic of 40 Yard dash times and how bogus they are.  I could not agree more.

The article is available online by paid subscription only, so I put the article in a PDF file.

Considering an Ultramarathon?

If you know a Marathoner who is considering "moving up" to the Ultras (50 km and up), read my 2 posts below about my 3 day experience coaching and crewing for my runner.

2011-09-02 04:00:00-04

Based on popular demand, I am going to elaborate more on the following stretches from the article Stretching: More on Static, Dynamic, Active Isolated and Resistance and to some extent Dynamic Warm Up vs. Static Stretching Controversy.  To a certain extant, these stretches are beneficial for those suffering from Achilles tendonitis. But first of all, the [...]

Calculating 4×100 meter Relay Potential
2011-09-06 13:00:00-04

How do you predict a 4×100 meter Relay time? My calculations uses the best 4 times of each athlete from their season best (not personal best), subtract 1 second due to acceleration out of the blocks for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th leg, and add 0.1 sec for each of the 3 exchanges. That’s the lead-off [...]

Here are 5 topics that athletes should consider when it comes to sleep.  Non athletes will benefit from this article, too. 1. How much to Sleep I [...]

The Reverse 400 meters running Clockwise, not counter-clockwise
2011-09-19 03:15:00-04

This is not an April fools joke… Just like the 1908 Olympic Marathon was extended to present day 26 miles, 385 yards (or 42.195m), running counter clockwise started in the 6th century BC and has stayed that way ever since. That is, until the 2011 Brussels Diamond League. Take a look at the YouTube video below (fast forward [...]

Coaching is like Buying a Vowel – AEIOU
2011-09-22 04:00:00-04

Plyometrics, Ground Contact Time, and Sprinting (Part 4)
2011-09-29 11:40:00-04

This is Part 4 of a multi-part article. The purpose of the article Plyometrics, Ground Contact Time, and Sprinting was simply to demonstrate the faster the movement, the shorter the ground contact time.  Dunking a basketball is much different than sprinting, so the Plyometrics you do should have a positive impact on improving (or optimizing) ground [...]
