Time for a Change… More Interviews

After 5 years of blogging, I decided to make a change to the site, and that is to include interviews with coaches and athletes.

Why?

When I post an original article on training, they aren’t random thoughts. Often, they are influenced by hundred of coaches that I have spoken and interviewed over the years, as well as attending seminars (USATF and my own seminars back in Vancouver)

So with their permission, I will share those interviews with you, and I hope you will gain as much information as I have.

Generally, you’ll see 3 formats, and I will post them all in the Interview category on the Blog.

The first format is Skype calls (with the occasional podcast when video fails!). Check out interviews with Lashawn Merritt, Jeshua Anderson, Steve Williams, Margot Wells, and IAAF sports agent Kris Mychasiw.

The second format is real time “reporter style” interviews, microphone and all, with athlete-turned-coach Dennis Mitchell and the legendary Brooks Johnson.

The 3rd format is very exciting as I call it the Weekly “Friday Five” series where I ask 5 tough questions to world class elite coaches. You can check out the first installment with Boo Schexnayder. Obviously, the questions by email are much more complex!

I hope you enjoy this new format, but don’t you worry, I will still post my original training, nutrition and recovery articles too!

If you have any suggestions for the interviews, please send me an email to [email protected] or reply to this newsletter. I personally read every email, but may not have time to respond.

Boo’s Complete Jumps Training Program

Speaking of BOO, in the past I highly recommended Boo Schexnayder’s Complete Jumps Training program for Long and Triple Jumpers. I’ve been to enough USATF seminars and Boo is one of the leading experts in the jumps.

Now his training set comes complete with the High Jump DVD. You can get all 5 DVDs for $159, which has all 3 jumps (long, triple, high), plus 2 bonus DVDs for circuits and Weight Training.

5 year Anniversary contest

Over the past 5 years, I’ve had the pleasure to work with many vendors and several have offered door prizes to celebrate my 5 years of daily blogging. With 6000 Blog readers a day and 18,000 newsletter subscribers, it’s only fitting that I share these prizes with you, the reader. Stay tuned for details.

100m Hurdles: It’s about Flight time (& Speed), not Ground Contact
2012-03-30 04:00:00-04

Two years ago, I wrote about how the Women’s world records were almost impossible to break with the exception of the recent additions of the Pole Vault, Triple Jump and Hammer Throw. The reason was possibly the “looser” drug testing policies from the 1980’s. I never thought I would see the 12.21 WR of Yordonka [...]

Iwan Thomas & Michael Johnson: How to Run the Relay
2012-04-05 05:15:00-04

It’s April, and that means relays! But for the Olympics, it’s a different story.  The qualification process for the Relay events (4 x100m and 4 x 400m) for London 2012 is as follows: A maximum of 16 qualified teams in each relay event (for 2 semi-finals), based on the aggregate of the two fastest times [...]

Asafa Powell Starting Blocks Sequence
2012-04-10 07:40:00-04

I posted some starting block sequences with Usain Bolt, Valery Borzov, Carl Lewis, and now Asafa Powell.  For Armin Hary’s starting block sequence, you can buy the re-release of Bud Winter’s The Rocket Sprint Start (previous edition was 1964). From a website that never took off, www.maximum-maximorum.com, it had a great sequence using Quintic Consultancy [...]

Hurdle Touchdown Times, Part A
2012-04-18 04:00:00-04

This is Part 3 of a multi-part series.  Part 1 was with Dennis Mitchell.  Part 2 was with Brooks Johnson. Hurdle touchdown times are the Holy Grail to coaching hurdles.  There are many ways coaches interpret data, and all you are looking for is IMPROVEMENT over time. I talked about how Sally Pearson is aiming [...]

How to Use Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) with Training
2012-04-19 09:00:00-04

One of the big surprises from my recent trip to ESPN Wide World of Sports and Clermont’s NTC was how little Electrical Muscle Stimulation is used for training or recovery.  They are using it mostly for rehab and that seems to be the common thread.  I have lived in Rome for 3 years now and [...]

4x100m Relay: Whatever you Do, Don’t Take off too Soon
2012-04-26 04:00:00-04

This is part 2 of a 3 part series. Part 1 talked about relay zones and how to time them for improvement. The recent 4×100 relay at the 2012 UTech Track & Field Classic against Racers and MVP demonstrated some important “lessons” in executing fundamentals with relay passes in the exchange zone. Don’t Take off [...]
