Greetings & Salve!

The Freelap Friday Five series is quickly becoming my favorite articles to write for the Blog. Why? Because I get a chance to ask 5 tough questions to elite coaches, athletes, and sometimes athlete-turned-coach.

In the series, I actually cheat as I ask sub-questions within a question. Heh heh…

This past month, I had some very interesting interviews, including:

  • Matt Scherer, a Professional Pacer-Rabbit for 800m-Mile
  • Stuart McMillan, Bobsled and former UKA Sprint Coach (including Dwain Chambers)
  • Dean Starkey, Pole vault Coach and former 5.92m Elite Pole Vaulter
  • Mike Hurst, Daily Telegraph Journalist and accomplished Australian 400 meter Coach

Plenty of insight from these various coaches and athletes!

Eddie Hart Falling Sprint Start (free ebook)

Eddie Hart, the 1972 Olympic gold medalist in the 4x100m relay, ran Masters track after his open career, as well as coached Track & Field. His 10.87 at M40 was a WR for 14 years, before Troy Douglas ran 10.29!

Coach Hart coaches in Northern California, and he created a mini ebook on the Falling Sprint Start.

If you are interested, just send an email to [email protected] and ask for the free ebook on the Falling Sprint Start.

2013-02-06 06:00:00-05

Yesterday’s podcast from Kenta’ Bell on Coaching Sprint Force & Mechanics mentioned the Jamaicans using the Rocket Sprint Start. Starting blocks are all about putting yourself in the right biomechanical angles for the best and most efficient start possible.  Beating everyone else to the first 10 or 20 meter mark helps, too. Here is an [...]

Ato Bolden’s Secret Tip: How to Run a Faster 40 Yard Dash
2013-02-21 06:00:00-05

With the NFL Football Combine approaching, everyone talks about the 40 yard dash.  Everything from Chris Johnson’s “legit” 4.24 to Deion Sanders’ “reported”  4.17.  We even try to compare (hypothetically) about what Ben Johnson or Usain Bolt could run the 40 yard dash. I’ll sum up my tip in one sentence on how to run [...]

Sprint Drills and Cues, Part 10
2013-02-26 08:00:00-05

Next to the various sprinting workouts and weight room exercises, the most controversial topic is sprint drills or speed drills. Do they work? Why do you do them? What is the purpose? For my athletes, I use sprint drills as part of the dynamic warm up, but also as reminder for cues.  Of course, marching [...]
