  • Controversial Topic on Weightlifting
  • Best of September and October 2012

Greetings,

Last year, I updated Bud Winter’s 1964 classic The Rocket Sprint Start book using modern day techniques and science. The original 1964 version is left intact, with my update as Part 2, and a special Part 3 comparing Armin Hary (1960) to the Jamaican sprint start in 2008.

I am happy to announce the book is now available on Amazon Kindle as well as Amazon worldwide sites in the UK, DE, FR, ES, IT and JP.

Fireside Chats

I started a new series called Fireside Chat which are roughly 20 minute one-on-one discussions with various coaches. There was one discussion that started a flame war regarding weightlifting. We all agree running fast at track workouts will make you fast.

However, what I find incredible is the difference in weight lifting theories and routines out there from various coaches. The commenters in the Blog article are highly respected track and strength coaches with impressive resumes, so you can learn a lot just by reading the comments. It may open your eyes and adjust what you are currently doing. Sometimes, thinking out of the box is a good thing.

Here is the link to that video and article:

Plyometric & Weight Training Program for College Sprinters
2012-09-04 10:10:00-04

I get a lot of requests on this topic.  Here is my take, without knowing more about you, your background, your genetics, your build, your times, etc. Since you are school, I would spend no more than 1 hour in the weight room.  (45 min is ideal) If you are doing a 4 week training [...]

7 Strides for the First 10 meters
2012-09-18 04:00:00-04

One of my earliest workouts when I was a long/triple jumper was jumping off the board from 7 strides. I didn’t realize it at the time, but my run-up distance was probably… 10 meters! I wrote about 7 Strides for the First 10 meters back in 2010, where most sprinters reached 10 meters on their [...]

Explosive Strength Training with Randy Hadley
2012-09-24 04:00:00-04

This is Part 10 of a multi-part series from my recent trip to Orlando & Clermont, Florida. Part 1 was with Dennis Mitchell.  Part 2 was with Brooks Johnson. Parts 3 & 5 was Hurdle Touchdown Times with Kellie Wells Training and Part 4 included Håkan Andersson.  Part 6 was my interview pre-London. Part 7 was [...]

In Season, Off-Season, and Electrostimulation
2012-10-03 12:30:00-04

It’s now October, which means a few things… School and NFL football has begun with REAL referees, and you probably are returning to the track for GPP training. Most of my College and post-College athletes took 2 weeks off with the first week of absolutely nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing! The annual plan of [...]

What to Do If You Miss a Workout
2012-10-12 04:00:00-04

Another question from the mailbag (actually my Email InBox, but mailbag just sounds sexy): Q: Coach, what do I do if I miss a workout? Answer: First, let me remind you that there are only 2 reasons to be late for my practice, or skip a workout:  Death and Childbirth. Just kidding… It depends if [...]

Usain Bolt – Science of Olympic Gold
2012-10-15 11:40:00-04

In this short 2 minute video, the documentary lists nearly all the facts known about Usain Bolt Olympic 100 meters.   If you followed this Blog for a while, NONE of the numbers presented are new to you, as these numbers come from several past articles (I’m too lazy to look them up and cross reference).   [...]

Cramping: Reasons and Possible Solutions
2012-10-17 04:21:00-04

One of the most popular articles on this Blog is Leg Cramps while Sleeping and Preventing Leg Cramps while Racing (or Training). In addition, you’ve probably read about my experiences with REgel (Tahoe 2011, Tahoe 2012, and product review). So here is a guest article from By Thach Ho, the creator of REgel which is [...]

Sprint Drills: Gerard Mach Revisited
2012-10-19 03:45:00-04

I had the opportunity to meet Gerard Mach back in spring of 1993.  I had just “retired” from open competition at the age of 30 and moved to Ottawa, Canada.  I spent 9 years with the same coach, Dennis Barrett of McGill University, and it was time to get a real (high paying) job and [...]

Speed Drills: Clyde Hart Revisited
2012-10-22 04:00:00-04

Last week, I discussed “speed drills” or “form drills” with Gerard Mach. I want to flashback to December 2007 where I had the chance to meet with Clyde Hart at the USATF NPEP in Las Vegas. There are several sources of free Clyde Hart videos on the web, and until recently, those were your only [...]

Fireside Chat: Weight Lifting Before or After Track Practice?
2012-10-23 04:00:00-04

I’m going through the mailbag one question at a time. In past Fireside Chats, I asked Derek Hansen about the Sprint Coach, Strength Coach & Physical Therapist Triad as well as How to Pick a Good Sprint Coach. The next question is arranging your weight sessions around track practice. Let’s assume you train at 5pm [...]

Carmelita Jeter Weight Training Sessions
2012-10-24 03:04:35-04

I love reality TV for elite athletes. That’s why I try to post as much training videos from Olympic athletes and coaches.  (i.e. Clyde Hart speed drills or David Oliver’s explosive weight training sessions) Yesterday’s post asked the famous question, “Should you do your weights before or after the track session?”. Obviously, both are good, [...]

Speed Drills: John Smith Revisited
2012-10-29 04:00:00-04

Anytime you have John Smith presenting, you can feel the passion in his voice. This man loves Track and Field. Add ex-athlete turned coach Jon Drummond to the mix, and you have an educational and comical time. He is, after all, the clown prince of Track and Field.  Our sport needs more “personalities”… The University [...]
